Verdict

Older cats (10+) where accident-only is the rational floor.

PetSure-underwritten, RSPCA-branded. The accident-only plan is one of the cheapest entry points in the AU market โ€” useful for older cats where comprehensive premiums are uneconomic. A portion of each premium goes to RSPCA, which some owners find meaningful.

What RSPCA Pet Insurance actually covers

RSPCA Pet Insurance is underwritten by PetSure. PetSure underwrites most AU pet-insurance brands โ€” when you see Knose, RSPCA Pet, Woolworths, Medibank, ahm or Bupa, you're looking at variations of the same PetSure product with different branding, member discounts, and pricing tweaks. The cover wording is similar across them; differentiation is mostly price.

For cats specifically, the line items that matter most: vet consultations, diagnostics (bloods, urinalysis, ultrasound), surgery, dental (often a separate optional cover), prescription medication, hospital stays, and emergency overnight care.RSPCA Pet Insurance reimburses 70% / 80% of eligible costs up to $12,000 (accident-only), $15,000 (comprehensive) per year.

Pros

Watch out for

Waiting periods & age limits

Pre-existing exclusions are universal across AU pet insurance. Anything diagnosed or showing symptoms before enrolment (and the relevant waiting period) is excluded for life. The most common gotcha: vet notes a "grade 1 heart murmur, monitor" at the kitten check โ€” anything cardiac is now excluded. Enrolling early matters.

Is RSPCA Pet Insurance right for your cat?

Older cats (10+) where accident-only is the rational floor.

The cleanest sanity-check: get a quote from RSPCA Pet Insuranceand one alternative from the opposite underwriter (PetSure โ†” Hollard). If the premium gap is < 10% and you don't have specific breed-hereditary concerns, take the cheaper. If you have a pedigree with known hereditary risk, default to the Hollard product even at a 15โ€“20% premium.
